Gail L. Cramer, Professor
and Head of the Department was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award,
the highest award of the Southern Agricultural Economics Association, at
their annual meeting, February 4, 2002 in Orlando, Florida. The
purpose of the award is to recognize significant and enduring
contributions in the scholarship of Southern Agricultural Economics.
Professor Cramer pioneered the integration of Agribusiness into
Agricultural Economics. He was cited for his agricultural
economics textbook Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, 8th
edition, published by John Wiley and Sons in 1979; his research in the
rice industry, editing the Review of Agricultural Economics, and
for his role in founding the International Agricultural Management
Association.

Manuel
Filipe (Graduate Student), Lonnie Vandeveer
(Warner L. Bruner Professor of Finance and Agribusiness), and Kurt Guidry
(Extension Specialist) were recipients of the First Place Poster Award
from the Southern Agricultural Economics Association. The winning
poster was entitled "Pre-Harvest Marketing Strategies and Financial
Performance: What's the Connection?" and was presented at the
Ninety-Ninth Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Agricultural
Scientists (SAAS), Orlando, Florida, February 2-6, 2002.

The
Louisiana Board of Regents has awarded the Department two new Graduate
Fellowships to begin in Fall 2002. Drs. Richard F. Kazmierczak,
Jeffrey M. Gillespie, R. Wes Harrison and P. Lynn Kennedy
coauthored the grant proposal that was successful in obtaining the Ph.D.
and M.S. Fellowship funds totaling $100,000. These new awards
bring the total to 3 Ph.D. and 1 M.S. BOR Graduate Fellowships in the
Department. Recruiting for the newest fellows will begin in the
coming academic year, but the Department is currently accepting applications for 2
Ph.D. Fellowships in any
research area of Agricultural Economics. The Fellowships come with a
stipend of $17,000 annually for up to four years, a cost of tuition
waiver, and a small research fund. Applicants must be
U.S. citizens, but do not need to have a previous graduate degree or
graduate academic experience. Interested individuals should immediately
begin the application process by contacting Dr. Richard F. Kazmierczak,
Jr. at the email address rkazmierczak@agctr.lsu.edu. Please indicate your unofficial GRE scores,
your undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) grade-point average, and

Mike
Salassi (Associate Professor of Farm
Management and Production Economics) and Janis Breaux (Research
Associate) were recipients of the Best Presented Paper Award
in the Agricultural Section at the annual meeting of the American
Society of Sugarcane Technologists in New Orleans on June 14-15, 2001.
The paper was titled "Economically Optimal Crop Cycle Length
for Major Sugarcane Varieties in Louisiana."

Lonnie
R. Vandeveer (Warner L. Bruner Professor of Finance and
Agribusiness)
is the
recipient of the 2001 Certificate of Merit Research Award presented by
the LSU Chapter of the Honor Society of Agriculture, Gamma Sigma
Delta. This award is made to an active Chapter member of the
faculty of the College of Agriculture, the LSU Agricultural Center, the
School of Veterinary Medicine, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, or
a member of Gamma Sigma Delta who has made an outstanding research
contribution to agriculture.

Lynn
Kennedy (Associate Professor of International Trade and
Agribusiness) is the recipient of the 2001
Certificate of Merit Teaching Award presented by the LSU Chapter of the
Honor Society of Agriculture, Gamma Sigma Delta. This award is made to a
Chapter member of the faculty of the College of Agriculture, the School of
Veterinary Medicine, or related departments for outstanding teaching in
the classroom.

following Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness faculty have been
placed on the 2001 Teacher Merit Honor Roll of the LSU Chapter of Gamma
Sigma Delta, the Honor Society of Agriculture: Jeffrey M. Gillespie
(Associate Professor of Farm Management and Production Economics), Steven
A. Henning (Associate Professor of Resource and Rural Development
Economics), Michael E. Salassi (Associate Professor of Farm
Management and Production Economics), Lonnie R. Vandeveer (Warner L. Bruner Professor of Finance and
Agribusiness) and Hector O. Zapata (Professor of Quantitative
Methods and Price Analysis). This award is given annually to teachers in
the College of Agriculture and the School of Veterinary Medicine who
have obtained student evaluation scores above the average of the college
and put forth teaching efforts that are considered above and beyond the
call of duty based on the faculty member's official job description.
This year’s recipients were recognized at the LSU Chapter’s Spring Banquet.

Richard F.
Kazmierczak, Jr., Associate Professor of Resource
and Environmental Economics, was appointed Senior Research Fellow
at the Marine Policy Center of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
(WHOI) in Massachusetts. WHOI is a a private research institution
originally set up by the Rockefeller Foundation to study marine science
within an interdisciplinary context. Economists and other social
scientists at the Marine Policy Center assess current national and
international oceanic issues, serving as a link between public policy
and scientific research. Education is also an important mission of
WHOI and the Marine Policy Center, and graduate degrees are awarded
through a joint program with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT). Dr. Kazmierczak will be in residence at the Marine Policy
Center from September 2001 through August 2002.

The
department is accepting applications for 2 Ph.D. Fellowships in any
research area of Agricultural Economics. The Fellowships, provided
by the Louisiana Board of Regents for Higher Education, come with a
stipend of $17,000 annually for up to four years, a cost of tuition
waiver, and a small research fund. The Fellowships are available
beginning with the Summer 2001 semester, although enrollment later in
the 2001-2002 academic year is allowed. The Fellowships will be awarded
on a competitive basis with previous academic record, Graduate Record
Examination scores, and letters of recommendation being the most
important criteria used in the selection process. Applicants must be
U.S. citizens, but do not need to have a previous graduate degree or
graduate academic experience. Interested individuals should immediately

James
Cody Goodman, undergraduate in Agricultural Business, teamed up with
students from the University of Florida and Clemson University to take
second place in the 2001 Southern Agricultural Economics Association
Quiz Bowl contest. After an initial loss in the opening round of
competition, the team swept the loser's bracket to enter the
championship final, where they faced off against the team that handed
them the original loss. Needing two wins to take the championship,
Cody and his team battled through a close game, but ultimately lost and
received the prize for being runner-up. Congratulations on the
fine showing, Cody!

Hector
O. Zapata, Professor of
Quantitative Methods and Price Analysis, has been appointed to a three
year position on the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA)
Quality of Communications Award Committee. This committee
evaluates published articles from the calendar year preceding the year
of recognition and seeks to identify those contributions to the
literature that most clearly and effectively communicate critical
economic concepts to the reader.

Lonnie Vandeveer (Warner L. Bruner Professor of Finance and
Agribusiness), graduate student Patricia Soto, and instructor/GIS
coordinator Huizhen Niu are to be honored with the McGraw-Hill Distinguished
Paper Award at the upcoming Southwestern Society of Economists meeting. The
award for the paper entitled "A Statewide Analysis of the Effects of
Location and Economic Development on Rural Land Values" will be
presented at the Southwestern Federation of Academic Disciplines Awards and
Recognition Reception, New Orleans, on February 28, 2001.
